Doubt Your Doubts

Doubts are tricky things. They masquerade as truth-tellers, whispering accusations in our ears in the moments when we are most vulnerable. They don’t show up when we’re strong, clear-minded, and rooted in truth. No, doubts slink in during the storm—when we’re tired, discouraged, or overwhelmed. This is when they set up shop and attempt to wreak havoc in our souls.
But here’s the thing: doubts are about as trustworthy as a crooked politician, tirelessly spinning lies and half-truths until your heart feels like a restless, discontented mess. They whisper distortions, undermine your peace, and rob you of joy. Maybe it’s time to stop giving them so much power. And, because they mean you no good, and bring you no joy, perhaps it is time for us to begin doubting them. Maybe it’s time to begin doubting our doubts.

For instance, when they come at us with those cutting accusations, saying things like: You’re depraved. You’re too far gone. God is angry at you. You’re broken. Maybe you are not a Christian? You’re a loser. You will never be enough. God doesn’t love you. You should be ashamed. The sad truth is, there is some truth in what your doubts are screeching. You are depraved in your sin. You were too far gone to rescue on your own. God was violently angry at you in your sin and misery. You won’t be enough! Most of these accusations contain some element of the truth. But, the problem is, they do not tell the whole story.

Because, as bad as you were, if you are in Jesus Christ, then those things are not the final word for you. Why? Because the story doesn’t end with us. It ends with Him.

When we let doubts run unchecked, they become an echo chamber of unmet expectations, anxieties, and insecurities that take us from bad to worse. The chatterbox in our mind drones on with accusations, feeding feelings of shame and inadequacy. But feelings, no matter how real they may seem, aren’t the ultimate measure of truth. Truth comes from God’s Word, which tells a far better story.

For instance, when doubts arise, we must interrupt them with truth. We need to stop listening to all of the garbage we are feeding ourselves and start speaking truth to ourselves, reminding ourselves of what God says about us in His Word. Instead of letting our doubts define us, we can remind ourselves of what God says about us, now that we are in Christ.

Here are just a few examples:

Because of Christ: You are not alone; God is with you! (Isaiah 41:10)
Because of Christ: You are not insignificant; He sought you out! (Luke 19:10)

Because of Christ: You are not defeated; you are more than a conqueror through Him! (Romans 8:37)
Because of Christ: You are not insignificant; you are God’s workmanship, created for good works! (Ephesians 2:10)
Because of Christ: You are not bound by fears; you have been given a spirit of power, love, and self-discipline! (2 Timothy 1:7)
Because of Christ: You are not defeated by trials; He is working all things for your good! (Romans 8:28)
Because of Christ: You are not defined by your past; you are a new creation in Christ! (2 Corinthians 5:17)
Because of Christ: You are not powerless; the same Spirit that raised Jesus lives in you! (Romans 8:11)
Because of Christ: You are not hopeless; Christ in you is the hope of glory! (Colossians 1:27)
Because of Christ: You are not defeated by temptation; He provides a way out! (1 Corinthians 10:13)
Because of Christ: You are not unseen; His eyes are on you, and His ears are attentive to your cry! (Psalm 34:15)
Because of Christ: You are not an orphan; He has adopted you into His family! (Romans 8:15)
Because of Christ: You are not unprotected; the Lord is your shield and fortress! (Psalm 18:2)
Because of Christ: You are not unnoticed; He rejoices over you with singing! (Zephaniah 3:17)
Because of Christ: You are not vulnerable to the enemy; no weapon formed against you will prosper! (Isaiah 54:17)

Every one of these truths is personally backed up and guaranteed by a God who cannot lie. They don’t change based on your feelings, your circumstances, or your performance. They are secure today as they ever have been and ever will be because they are rooted in the finished work of Jesus Christ.

One of my favorite songs captures this beautifully:

"I just want to shout it out for the world to hear it
That I'm His kid no matter what I'm feeling
I'm doubting doubts, I just cannot help believing
That I am loved no matter what."

— Citizens & Saints

This is the anthem we need to sing over our lives when doubts creep in. Because if you are in Christ, you are loved—no matter what. Nothing can separate you from that love (Romans 8:38-39). Not your failures. Not your doubts. Not even your feelings of unworthiness.

The next time doubts rise up, don’t let them have the last word. Doubt your doubts instead. Challenge them with the truth of God’s Word. Speak these promises over yourself, even if your heart struggles to believe them at first. Let them drown out the noise of the chatterbox and fill your mind with the voice of your Shepherd, who calls you by name (John 10:3).

Remember, the story doesn’t end with you—it ends with Jesus. And because of Him, you are not defined by your sin, your shame, or your doubts. You are defined by His righteousness, His grace, and His unshakeable love. So cling to that truth. Proclaim it boldly. And doubt your doubts, because the God who holds you will never let you go.
